“Water for Rivers”
Ken Neubecker—April 15, 2008
For more than a century, water has been diverted from rivers for “consumptive” use on agricultural fields and in homes and industry. There is, however, a growing awareness of the non-traditional use of water which requires water to remain in the river, termed “non-consumptive” use. Those working with the non-consumptive use concept are trying to quantify diverse needs, such as establishing minimum stream flows for recreation, fishing and riparian habitat. In Colorado, efforts to protect non-consumptive uses are currently taking place through the 1177 Basin Roundtable process. Join Roaring Fork Audubon to hear Carbondale resident Ken Neubecker, who is actively involved in the 1177 process as a member of the Colorado Basin Roundtable. Formerly an Eagle resident, Ken was a founding member of the Eagle River Watershed Council, which works to protect water quality in the Eagle River watershed. He is the vice-president of Colorado Trout Unlimited and is generally considered a “charter member” of citizens concernedabout water issues. RFAS is pleased to hear Ken’s “take” on the vital topic of maintaining healthy rivers.
